Holiday Flight Entertainment
We know that taking the family on a flight over the Christmas Holidays can be best described as, well…a slog. Don’t get us wrong, we know family vacations are fun and create wonderful lasting memories, but that flight can be hard work, especially if there are young ones involved! So, we thought we’d list our top 5 family Christmas movies that you and your family can watch as you travel through the air. They may just help make your hours on the plane more enjoyable for you and, let’s face it, everyone else on board!
A Christmas Story (1983)
This cult classic will have your family rolling in the aisles–literally! The movie is set in the 1940’s and centers around 9-year-old Ralphie, who only wants one thing for Christmas: a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun. The family is wonderfully quirky and lovable and the movie perfectly portrays the challenges, expectations, disappointments, and joys of a kid around Christmastime. Funny and hilarious without being crass or resorting to off-color language, this movie is perfect for the whole family, no matter what age you are!
It’s a Wonderful Life (1947)
It’s always surprising when you run into people who have not seem this classic film starring Jimmy Stewart. Probably one of the most poignant and cinematically beautiful Christmas movies ever made, this movie will have you laughing and crying throughout. The basic premise of the film as that an angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed. However, Jimmy Stewart’s masterful acting, along with a stellar cast of character actors make this movie come alive in a way that so few films can. Make sure you ask your flight attendant for some Kleenex before you view this beautiful film with your family!
Elf (2003)
This is definitely one of the sweetest Christmas films out there, and also, arguably, one of the best rolls Will Ferrell has played. The basic plot is after inadvertently wreaking havoc on the elf community due to his ungainly size, a man raised as an elf at the North Pole is sent to the U.S. in search of his true identity. The movie is laugh-out-loud funny, for all ages, which makes this movie a great choice for the plane ride!
Scrooged (1988)
This movie stars Bill Murray–need we say more? Ok, we’ll say a little more. Essentially this is a loose adaptation of the classic “A Christmas Carol.” Only, (and we may get some flack for this) it’s funnier! Again, this film is perfect for the whole family and will have everyone, from grownups to kids, laughing!
Home Alone (1990)
While this movie may seem to hit a little too close to home while you’re dealing with the chaos of holiday travel, it’s one of the “new classic” films that most families can definitely relate to! While you may not actually be distracted to the point of forgetting one of your children at home, this movie will resonate with everyone in your family, and let’s face it, it’s a ton of fun to watch!
Happy Holiday Travels!
We hope that these movies will help make your in-flight experience just a little more fun and, hopefully, relaxing! We know this is not an exhaustive list, and we’d love to hear from you about your favorite holiday movies! Next year, we can add it to the list!
