Who’s Who at TravelSafe Clinic – Penny Gleave

Most Memorable Trip:

I’ve had several memorable trips but my most recent trip to Peru was a highlight for me.  I had been immersed in the business for a few years  and I’d been planning to visit Peru for a long time. It was time to make it happen.  A friend has a home right on the ocean near Mancora in northern Peru, approximately 2.5 hours south of the Ecuador border.  This area is much warmer than southern Peru and it is predominantly a destination for surfers, Ecuadorians, Argentinians and Peruvians seeking a warm holiday.

What advice would you give to other travellers taking the same trip?

I have a few suggestions:  flying from Vancouver to Lima takes time.  I highly recommend staying for as long as your time permits.  We flew to Lima via Mexico City.  The following morning we flew back north.  It requires lots of air travel time.  There are also so many things to do and see when you get there.

I’ll be honest, I don’t always practice my recommendations!  Bad idea. I left in a hurry and didn’t pack my usual ‘kit’ with gastrointestinal remedies.  I was careful about what I ate and drank but I couldn’t blame my upset stomach on the Pisco Sours.  I had a few days ‘setback’ and went to a Farmacia to get some remedies that I could have brought from home.

I should have brushed up on Spanish before departing.  I always find it is well received when you attempt to speak the language in the country you are visiting.  Google translation is good to a point but it isn’t ideal. I recommend memorizing some key words and phrases, to get by before departing to any destination.
